Asphalt Patching
If you have asphalt pavement, you’re no stranger to cracks and potholes. Not to worry. Patching up your asphalt is easier than you may think.
How do I patch my asphalt in Los Angeles?
You may be thinking to yourself, these small cracks in my asphalt don’t look like a big deal. I could probably take care of them myself. Are you sure?
Asphalt is a smelly endeavor that uses some specialized equipment. Do you really want to spend your time and money on fixing your asphalt cracks, when you could hire a professional to get them fixed instead? Probably easier to hire a professional.
There are a few steps in patching up asphalt:
- Sweep up dust and dirt.
- Pull out and remove any vegetation.
- If it’s a larger patch, you will need to add a gravel/sand mix to the bottom of the hole before applying your patch.
- Use cold asphalt patching, if you’re fixing the patch yourself. You will need to use a small blowtorch to make the asphalt patch pliable.
- Let the patch cure for 24 hours before driving on it.
If you have larger cracks or holes that need to be fixed, your asphalt contractor will likely use hot asphalt. That requires special training and equipment. You definitely want a contractor to take care of it for you.
Make sure you take care of those small, hairline cracks. You don’t want them to grow into something larger that will require you to replace your entire pavement. Also, make sure you are getting your asphalt resealed every two to three years. Some sealers will seep into those small cracks, patching them up.
When is it time to replace my asphalt in Los Angeles?
Overall, asphalt is pretty durable under extreme conditions. It’s exposed to UV every day, not to mention water and traffic. Asphalt can withstand those pressures. However, there does come the time when your asphalt just needs to be completely replaced. Here’s when:
- Potholes: Small potholes are easily fixable. When more potholes emerge or when they get too large, that indicates an issue with your foundation and it’s time to replace that asphalt.
- Standing Water: Your asphalt paving should be sloped to ensure there are no standing puddles of water. If you start to see those lurking around, it’s time to tear out the asphalt and re-slope your pavement.
- Neglecting your sealcoat: Not only does sealcoat make your asphalt look like new, it’s necessary for the upkeep. If it’s been more than three years since your asphalt was resealed, it’s time to replace the whole thing.
- Deep Cracks: Cracks are common in asphalt. It comes with settling and shifting soil underneath. It just happens. Most cracks are easily repaired. However, if your asphalt has extensive cracking (this alligator cracks – those cracks that look like alligator skin) or large cracks emerge, it’s time for it to go.
- Age: Asphalt has a lifespan. Most asphalt can last about 20 years. If your pavement is over 15 years old and is starting to look damaged and worn out, do yourself a favor and replace it.
