Asphalt Repair and Resurfacing
No matter how maintained your asphalt is, the bottom line is, cracks happen. Roots may grow under the asphalt and push it up. Water soaks in and shifts the soil underneath. Over time, you’ll find that you will have to repair and resurface your asphalt.
Not to worry. It’s easy to repair asphalt in just a few steps.
How can I repair and resurface my asphalt in Los Angeles?
While repairing and resurfacing your asphalt may look like an easy DIY project, you will want to hire a professional to do it. The amount of time and expense in specialized equipment needed to complete this project should be enough to make you pick up that phone and call an asphalt contractor. For licensed asphalt contractors, repairing asphalt is no big deal. For a weekend DIYer, it is a big deal.
So, what is involved in repairing asphalt?
- Assess the damage – Is this surface damage or is there structural damage going on?
- Clean the area – Pull out all the weeds growing in between the cracks. Clean the asphalt with a special solution and then wait 24 hours to let the asphalt dry.
- Mill the asphalt – A power grinder will pulverize the existing asphalt so that it can be easily replaced.
- Repair the cracks – Fill the cracks with crack filler and sealcoat the bottom layers of the asphalt to make sure the bottom of the asphalt holds on to the top.
- Lay the new asphalt
- Let it cure (aka, dry)
- Seal the asphalt – You want to do this six to 12 months later to preserve the new layer. Interestingly, you don’t want to do this too soon because you want the new layer to cure completely before sealing the asphalt.
Sounds easy, right? This is why it’s best to call a licensed asphalt contractor to complete this work.
When should I resurface my asphalt?
You don’t always have to resurface your asphalt. However, if you are seeing potholes, pooling water, uneven surfaces, or alligator cracks (the kind of cracks that look like the skin of an alligator), you definitely want to resurface the asphalt.
